This is a play about the relationship with power that draws more than eloquent parallels to the reality.
Alexei Slapovsky’s play ‘King Lear and his Cook’ is a story about power, its nature and consequences. About illusion and fear, about blindness and deafness of the powerful. And about the fact that the greatest horror is not from outside, it is from within.
In Shakespeare’s original tragedy, King Lear dies. In Slapovsky’s modern play, the eponymous character Lear is not awaited by death, but by eternal sleep, oblivion.
The play as an occasion for conversation and an attempt to find answers to questions about the relationship between man and power. Does a dictator have the right to decide for everyone? Can he really do everything? Can he break any law in the name of higher goals?
Warning! The play was written in 2021, there are sensitive parallels to reality.
